EPA fuel economy estimates for the 1.8L engine with the manual transmission is 26/32 MPG (city/hwy.), while the 4-speed automatic is rated at 24/31 MPG (city/hwy.). Fortunately, the 5-speed manual is a slick-shifting unit with a light, progressive clutch. From a performance and fuel consumption perspective, the manual transmission is a better choice with the 1.8L than the automatic, which has a taller final drive ratio (4.23:1 vs. Pontiac offers a choice of a standard 5-speed manual or an optional 4-speed automatic with the 1.8L inline-4 the bigger 2.4L engine is available with a new 5-speed automatic. The optional 2.4L inline-4 cranks out 158-bhp/162 lb.-ft., which should attract the attention of enthusiasts not overly concerned about fuel economy. As one might expect, the Toyota-designed 4-cylinder is smooth, refined, and unobtrusive up to the 6,400 RPM redline. Even with dual VVT-i (variable valve timing), the small engine displacement results in underwhelming thrust below 2,000 RPM, although midrange torque is more robust. The 1.8L engine has adequate power to move the Vibe around town and the highway without protest. The Vibe's standard 1.8L inline-4 now generates slightly more horsepower with 132-bhp 6000 RPM torque output is 128 lb.-ft. Several small compartments hidden under the cargo floor panels can store small packages or loose items. Cargo volume behind the rear seats is 20.1 cu. The rear seats fold down for a flat load surface covered in hard plastic, instead of the customary carpet. Rear seat comfort is acceptable for two occupants, less so for a third passenger legroom is plentiful, assuming the front passengers cooperate. Headroom for front and rear seats should be adequate for 6 ft. Although the seats have adequate support, the fabric upholstery is somewhat slippery. Front seats are comfortable, with 6-way manually adjustable driver's seat the passenger gets 4-way seat adjustments. The Vibe accommodates up to five passengers, with dual front bucket seats and a rear bench. A 320-watt Monsoon audio system with 7-speakers/subwoofer is standard on the Vibe GT. An auxiliary input allows connections to external MP3 players. Despite having only four speakers, the Vibe's sound system cranks out tight bass and clear treble. Small cupholders are molded in the front door pockets, and between the seats next to the handbrake rear passengers get their own cupholders in a flip-out lid behind the center console.Īudio controls for the AM/FM/CD/MP3 system are at the top of the dash for easy access. Under the center armrest are two bins for storage the larger bin can hold compact discs. The glove box is big enough for small packages or purses. Pontiac also includes a handy 115V outlet next to the audio system to power laptops or small appliances a 12V outlet at the front of the center console is nearly hidden under the shift lever. Three clearly marked knobs for the HVAC system are within easy reach above a small storage bin on the center stack. The chrome-rimmed shift knob for the 5-speed manual sits above the center console. An 8,000 RPM tachometer flanks the centrally-mounted 130-MPH speedometer the odometer, fuel and coolant gauges, share a separate oval-shaped bezel. The driver faces a set of bright electroluminescent gauges in deeply inset pods. Interior materials and build quality are above average relative to most other compact hatchbacks from domestic and Asian manufacturers. Note that the new 5-speed automatic is only available with the 2.4L engine, except the Vibe AWD, which gets a standard 4-speed automatic.ĭespite its position at the bottom of the model lineup, the Vibe 1.8L is equipped with the basic amenities and features that customers would expect, such as power windows, locks, and cruise control. Given our performance-oriented preferences, we would spend the extra cash to move up to the Vibe 2.4L. The total sticker price was $17,940, including the $585 destination charge. The Preferred Package includes keyless entry, power door locks, power windows, and cruise control. We tested a base Vibe 1.8L, equipped with the 5-speed manual, Preferred Package ($945), air conditioning ($950), and upgraded AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system ($150). Significantly more expensive are the Vibe AWD ($19,495) and GT ($19,895), both equipped with the 2.4L engine. The front-drive Vibe 1.8L starts at an affordable $15,895 the optional 2.4L engine is $400 extra. Pontiac aims its compact hatchback at the Chrysler PT Cruiser, Dodge Caliber, and Mazda3, although the nearly identical Toyota Matrix is an obvious alternative. For 2009, an optional 2.4L inline-4 complements the Vibe's standard 1.8L engine. Although completely redesigned, Pontiac retained the styling cues and utility that attracted customers to the Vibe. Pontiac introduced the revamped Vibe just as high gasoline prices sent customers scurrying to smaller cars. Gosford Quarries Sandstone as Rock Armoury for Creek Embankment Sandstone Logs and Sandstone Rock armoury have been used in the Parramatta River Civil Project. The Hawkesbury management involved 500mm to 1-metre random rock with 300-500m sandstone balls in design, for example. Some Civil Engineers will specify smaller material sizes of the above for specific Civil Projects. These are usually in basic diamond shapes and are quarried by design to lock and protect embankments and act as erosion controls. Gosford Quarries supply Rock Armour for rivers and creeks at 500mm to 1 metre ideal for creek and river banks.įlatter random rocks can be stacked and designed to lock into one another. Sandstone Boulders and Random Rock for Civil Design Our sandstone embankments rocks consist of sandstone boulders which are also used in blade walling and sandstone rock armoury for embankment stabilisation. Gosford Quarries Sandstone Boulder Walls Landscape Random Rock Retaining Civil Product We have rock revetment for both freshwater (rock battery for creek beds) and saltwater (Marine) civil projects. Our flat sandstone boulders function as a perfect embankment retention rock. Gosford Quarries have a wide range of highly sought after raw quarry civil material for Civil Projects involving all environment projects for filtration and soil retention management for waterways. Civil Sandstone for Creeks, Rivers, Estuaries, Waterways and Seawalls Sandstone walls are often cheaper than concrete structures and are beneficial to the natural habitat encouraging and supporting the natural ecosystems of rivers, creeks, lakes and coastlines. The use of natural sandstone boulders creates pockets for fish and habitats for them to breed and these safe havens encourage fish breeding and other wildlife habitats in a more natural ecosystem. Other materials such as concrete and granite can affect the marine environment and certain breeds of fish and wildlife and can also contaminate freshwater habitats. Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authorities and Rainwater river catchments authorities prioritise VENM sandstone materials as they are natural and do not pollute rivers and affect fish and wildlife. In Lonely Crusade, another Chester Himes novel, a Black organizer reflects upon the paradox of the Black worker. For him, it is better to be defeated than deluded. He is a pawn, but he submits to being one because of a visceral knowledge of racism. In his eyes, they are all compelled to work for white men, but that doesn’t mean they should work with them. The script wisely makes Heavy more of an obstacle than a villain. Then there are those like Heavy, who refuses to join the union and agitates against them. There are those like Frank, who sees a way forward in a multiracial workers’ movement. Throughout the film, people who love each other, hate each other, or have no strong feelings at all find themselves in disagreement over the best way to survive white supremacy. Frank and Heavy (Moses Gunn), who may be acting on his own initiative or for the bosses, are at odds over more than collective bargaining. The story is based on court transcripts found by the film’s executive producer, Elsa Rassbach, who was struck by the testimony of two Black workers on opposite sides of the union fight. He becomes a hero not because he is brave, though he is, but because he doesn’t know another way to be. Frank stays and joins up with the mostly white union men because he believes their cause is just. Thomas gets the message and enlists to fight in Europe. It turns out to be good practice for this moment, which finds him, rag in hand, sopping up and wringing out the blood from a wounded face. Frank’s first job at the plant is mopping up floors to keep them from getting slick with the butchery’s fluids. When Thomas (Ernest Rayford), Frank’s best friend, is beaten in the slaughterhouse, the film cuts to a cow, then to the two men walking out, followed by a bowl of water gone ochre with blood. After Broadway but before his run with the Austrian Oak, he managed to craft The Killing Floor.Īlthough it was Duke’s feature-length directorial debut, it is propelled by strikingly beautiful and precise images, interspersed with archival footage functioning like newsreels from the wider world. He acted in the premiere run of Melvin Van Peebles’s Broadway show Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death, worked with the Negro Ensemble Company, appeared alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator and Commando, and helmed an adaptation of Chester Himes’s novel A Rage in Harlem that premiered at Cannes. Film Festival (later renamed Sundance) in 1984.ĭuke has had the kind of career that could be called trailblazing if its path didn’t seem impossible to follow. It originally aired on public television before screening at the U.S. Under Bill Duke’s direction, the movie is no romance, but it is a kind of love film, equally at ease with rousing speeches as with a man pulling a blanket up over a sleeping friend. With many white workers abroad during World War I, Frank Custer (Damien Leake) heads north for better prospects only to confront a labyrinth of middlemen, cruel bosses, and white supremacy. It is on one level an archetypical Great Migration tale. It depicts the attempt to form an interracial union at a Chicago meatpacking plant in the years leading up to the race riots of 1919’s Red Summer. Those short hours are often skipped over in a story’s rising action, but they are the ones filled with the affinities that make the fight worth fighting. These kinds of films provide a worthy service by displaying the high cost that is glossed over in a slogan like “unions-the folks that brought you the weekend.” The struggle for a dignified workplace has always gone hand in hand with the struggle for free time. “Will we or won’t we have a union?” is a local question, but the answer ripples outward beyond the confines of any one shop. The struggle lends itself easily to a sweeping narrative. Union films are war films by other means. For good reason, the movies tend to revolve around the explosive point of contact between the competing classes. Then there are the feet pounding away on a picket line and the grimacing faces of strikebreakers. They are more often concerned with bodies subjected to torsion and the furrowed brow of someone who knows the cupboards are growing bare. Labor films are not where one typically goes when seeking love and grace. It does, however, keep it from becoming a really great movie. This isn’t something that ruins a horror movie, when the story is otherwise working. The term “cookie cutter” comes to mind, but it’s not that they’re very stereotypical, they just don’t offer us the chance to go a bit deeper. They’re all interesting enough, but also too one-dimensional. The only issue I had with this movie was about the characters. Complete with its own past drama and issues that keep surfacing. Obviously, this also means you know exactly who will be the first victim, whenever one of them turns. To me, the core cast of Debs Howard ( iZombie), Ian Collins ( Supernatural), Danny Zaporozan, Behtash Fazlali, Marina Pasqua and Kylee Bush worked perfectly as the group of friends. They all worked really well, though – as always – some work better than others. But really, this is pretty good for the story. When it comes to the cast of The Evil in Us, it featured a lot of unfamiliar faces. The story is always evolving, which keeps the audience engaged. The Evil in Us is never boring or going in circles, so you do feel like it’s constantly moving ahead. The runtime is a perfect 90 minutes, which ensures enough time to tell the story, but also keeps it tight. It’s intense, creepy and – best of all – it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I mean, we are talking about people turning into something reminiscent of zombies, so it would be difficult if it becomes too dramatic. Still, this movie is a pretty bold debut. He’s done a couple of short films, so it’s not like he’s a complete newcomer. The Evil in Us is the feature film debut for writer and director Jason William Lee. After all, this is about people turning into blood thirsty creatures! There’s plenty of blood and violence in The Evil in Us, which is exactly as you’d expect. They just offer more of an explanation than we’re used to with horror movies. With The Evil in Us it’s not that they’re wrapping it all up nicely for us. I just had to mention how The Evil in Us does have a damn fine ending!Īlso, we all know there’s something really great about an ending that gives you that final gut punch. When we’re a bit pessimistic and tainted by Hollywood, anyway.īut… we don’t do spoiler filled reviews here at Heaven of Horror, so I won’t get further into this. Well, you know, except for the truly awesome ending, which is probably very typical of how outsiders tend to view the American way. Especially since it takes place on America’s Independence Day. There’s nothing in the story that would indicate this isn’t a US production, though. We’re following a group of friends, while also witnessing what’s happening in other parts of the country. The Evil in Us takes place during a 4th of July getaway, but it’s actually a Canadian production. As a bonus, it has a really cool explanation at the end! The Evil in Us is an intense ride into madness with zombie-like behavior, which includes an appetite for human flesh.
